Celebrex Uses
Celebrex is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory prescription pain killer that relieves pain and inflammation.

Celebrex and Osteoarthritis
The effectiveness of Celebrex was evaluated for the treatment of the signs and symptoms of Osteoarthritis of the knee and hip. A placebo (sugar pill) was compared with Celebrex treated patients in controlled clinical trials involving approximately 4,200 patients with Osteoarthritis. The clinical trials lasted up to 12 weeks in duration. In patients with Osteoarthritis, treatment with Celebrex 100 mg BID or 200 mg one time each day resulted in an improvement in patient and physician assessments in Osteoarthritis severity, taking into account joint pain, stiffness, and range of motion measures.
In three 12-week studies of joint pain accompanying Osteoarthritis flare, Celebrex doses of 100 mg given twice daily and 200 mg given twice daily provided significant reduction of pain within 24 to 48 hours of initiation of Celebrex dosing. A total daily dose of 200 mg of Celebrex has been shown to be equally effective whether administered as 100 mg twice a day or 200 mg once a day.
Celebrex and Rheumatoid Arthritis
Patients treated with Celebrex showed a significant reduction in joint tenderness/pain and joint swelling compared to placebo (sugar pill). Celebrex was evaluated for treatment of the signs and symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis in approximately 2,100 patients by comparing placebo and Celebrex treated patients in clinical trials of up to 24 weeks in duration. Celebrex was shown to be superior to placebo in these studies, using a Rheumatoid Arthritis severity index, a composite score taking into account join pain, stiffness, and range of motion measures as well as laboratory measures. In this study, it was shown that Celebrex doses of 100 mg twice a day and 200 mg twice a day were similar in effectiveness. Although in general, the higher dosage of Celebrex is recommended for more severe disease.
The usual dose of Celebrex for osteoarthritis is 200 mg daily or 100 mg twice daily. While patients with rheumatoid arthritis should start with these dosages of Celebrex, some patients with rheumatoid arthritis may benefit from dosage of 200 mg twice daily.
The maximum daily dose of Celebrex should not exceed 200 mg twice daily.

Side Effects
Side effects of Celebrex can include stomach upset, diarrhea, gas or nausea may occur. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly.
Very unlikely but report promptly: unusual fatigue, yellowing eyes or skin, severe headache, unexplained weight gain, change in amount of urine.
If you notice any of the following unlikely but very serious side effects, stop taking Celebrex and consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately: black stools, persistent stomach/ abdominal pain, vomit that looks like coffee grounds.
In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to Celebrex, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction to Celebrex include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
Tell your doctor your medical history, including: allergies (especially allergies to drugs such as sulfas or NSAID like ibuprofen), kidney problems, liver problems, heart disease, alcohol use, high blood pressure, swelling (edema), blood disorders (anemia), serious infections, stomach problems (bleeding or ulcers), asthma, growths in the nose (nasal polyps), dehydration, poorly controlled diabetes. This medicine may cause stomach bleeding. Daily use of alcohol, especially when combined with Celebrex , may increase your risk for stomach bleeding. Check with your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
Celebrex should be used only when clearly needed during the first 3 months of pregnancy. Celebrex is not recommended for use during the last 6 months of pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
It is not known whether Celebrex is excreted into breast milk. Due to the potential risk to the infant, taking Celebrex while breast feeding is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Caution is advised when Celebrex is used in the elderly, they may be more sensitive to the side effects of Celebrex.
Drug Interactions
Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medications you use, especially of: fluconazole, lithium, "water pills" (diuretics, e.g., furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide), drugs for high blood pressure, ACE inhibitors (e.g., captopril, lisinopril), corticosteroids (e.g., prednisone), "blood thinners" (e.g., warfarin), NSAID (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen). Check all prescription and nonprescription medicine labels carefully since many contain pain relievers/fever reducers (NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin) which are similar to this Celebrex. Aspirin, as prescribed by your doctor for reasons such as heart attack or stroke prevention (usually these dosages are 81-325 mg per day), should be continued. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
Overdose
If an overdose of Celebrex is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of an overdose of Celebrex may include severe stomach pain, coffee ground-like vomit, dark stool, ringing in the ears, change in amount of urine, unusually fast or slow heartbeat, muscle weakness, slow or shallow breathing, confusion, severe headache or loss of consciousness.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of Celebrex, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule.
Do not take 2 doses of Celebrex at once.
Celebrex Storage
Celebrex should be stored at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) in a tightly-closed container, keep Celebrex away from heat and light.
